もうひとつの世界・アナザーワールドは、時を超えて多くの人々を魅了し続けるテーマです。人は潜在的に、普段の生活では味わうことのできないものに思いを馳せ、想像を掻き立てられます。その「普通ではない」何か、目には見えない何かへの憧れや好奇心は、さまざまな世界を創り出し、見る者の胸を躍らせて来ました。

私たちの生きる今現在、未知のウイルスの脅威や、社会、経済の大きな変動によって、重い抑圧や閉塞感が生まれています。そうした状況では、日常的に意識しているものだけでなく、認識の外にあったものを見つめ、向き合うための想像力と柔軟さが、先の見えない不安を乗り越えていくための大きな力となります。

本展覧会は、まさに現在（いま）を生きる７名の作家によるガラス作品約70件を、「アナザーワールド」としてご紹介するものです。見えるものと見えないもの、見慣れたものと見慣れないもの、内側と外側、夢と覚醒。本展作品に見るこうした相反する要素は、ガラスという、二面性をもつ素材だからこそ表現できるものではないでしょうか。これらの作品は、私たちのいる世界のもうひとつの姿を見せてくれるでしょう。現実と地続きにある「不思議でリアルな世界」との出会いを、どうぞお楽しみください。

＿展覧会挨拶文より

Throughout the ages, people have been drawn to the theme of other worlds. The idea of experiencing something that does not exist in ordinary life has a way of inspiring us and sparking our imagination. The desire and curiosity in the unusual and invisible has spawned a variety of different worlds and filled our hearts with excitement.

At present, we live in a world that is rife with the threat of unknown viruses as well as severe oppression and a sense of hopelessness caused by drastic social and economic changes. In circumstances such as these, having the imagination and flexibility to deal with both everyday events and the unimaginable is a highly effective means of overcoming our anxiety of an uncertain future.

In this exhibition, we present approximately 70 works of glass created by seven living artists as examples of other worlds. Here we find the visible and invisible alongside the familiar and the unfamiliar, the inside and the outside, and dreams and awakenings. It is these conflicting elements in the works on display that have the ability to express the dual nature of glass as a material. The works also make us aware of new aspects of our world that we previously overlooked. We hope that you enjoy encountering these wondrous and lifelike worlds that dwell beside the real world.

呼吸を追う｜ Tracing the Breath

私たちの身の周りにある、目には見えないが意識することのできる“もの”を捉えようと試みている。
“もの”とは時間や記憶の積み重なりから生まれる、場所や物事がもつ気配のことであり、空間を満たす空気や光がもたらす空気感といった〈形容しがたいものだが認識されること〉だ。

生きる上で必要不可欠な空気を、呼吸という行為を通して考える。

空間の中にある奥行きや隔たりへと意識を向けて、自身と周囲との距離を測りなおす。

土地が抱える物事とそこから生まれる物語を紐解き、時間や距離を超えて場所とつながる。

熱と光によって姿を変えるガラスに、移ろう心情と動きを重ねる。

いくつかの方法によって、無意識に捉えていた“もの”を深く知覚する手段を探していく。
そして、人がそれぞれに抱えている、 “いつかどこかでおぼえた、かつての感覚” と共振する場をつくりたいと考えている。
変化し続ける世界の中で、目には見えないが確かに存在している物事を見つめる手がかりとなるように。

＿アナザーワールド展ステイトメントより

In my work, I attempt to grasp mono (“things”) in our surroundings which, though they may not be visible, are still perceivable. The word mono refers to the vestiges of places and objects that are products of an accumulation of time and memory, and the act of perceiving indescribable atmospheres created by the air and light that fill a space.

Consider the act of breathing, which is essential for us to go on living.

When we shift our attention to the depth and width of a space, we recalculate the distance between our bodies and the surroundings.

By unraveling the things that are contained in a space and the stories that emerged there, we can form a connection to a place that transcends time and distance.

There is a certain amount of overlap between glass, whose shape is altered by heat and light, changing feelings, and movement.

I use several techniques to search for a means of deeply perceiving mono that are unconsciously understood.
I strive to create a space that resonates with our innate sense of remembering things from other times and places.
It is my hope that this will provide viewers with hints about how to locate things that are invisible yet definitely exist in our constantly changing world.
